Giving Thanks

It's the time of year for reflections, and 2011 has been a monumental one for the homeless animals in Roanoke. And so, it is time to acknowledge our collective appreciation...

We are thankful the kill rate of homeless pets has decreased to around 50%.

We are thankful for the new volunteer program at RCACP.

We are thankful that more animals are receiveing medical care at RCACP.

We are thankful for the staff at RCACP. We know they want the best for the animals in their care, and do all they can within their power.

We are thankful to the municipal leaders of Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt and Vinton for listening to our concerns and ensuring a change for the better. .

And, most of all, we are thankful for the people who have been a voice for those who cannot speak. It has not been easy, it has not been perfect, but it has made a difference. Along the way we have made some awesome friends and had some fun.

One year ago today, would anyone have guessed that a rescue help desk would be in place? That city council had listened to us numerous times? That we had the need to make over 100 purple awareness ribbons? Held a peaceful rally for the animals? Heard the leadership of the pound tell Channel 10 to "turn the cameras off", and the volumes that statement would resonate? And that volunteers would be allowed in the building? Who would have guessed a little old stray cat would be given a name, a photo op, and real chance for a new life?

How about this... one year from now, we will be giving thanks for open adoption hours, a flexible foster program, a vibrant volunteer program, and a 90% save rate. Everybody up for it?

Today, we are thankful for actions, not empty promises, for all the animals that are trusting in us to do the right thing- young, old, healthy and sick. Each has a living soul and a beating heart, and your dedication and love for them is inspiring.
